1. After I had left a small village in the south of France, I drove on to the next town.

drive on: 继续行驶 (to continue driving)

介词 on 有 “持续地”、“不停地”的含义

He saw the accident but drove on.

2. On the way, a young man waved to me. I stopped and he asked me for a lift.

（1）on the way: 在途中

on his way to the next town, …

wave: v. 挥手

The young man waved to me and smiled.

（2）What did he ask the writer for?

ask sb. for: 请求某人……；要求某人……

Nowadays lots of children ask their parents for money to buy things they like.

lift: n. 搭车

3. As soon as he had got into the car, I said good morning to him in French and he replied in the same language. …

as soon as: 一……就……

一个动作时态先于另一个（表示两个动作有先后行）

The train had left as soon as he arrived at the railway station.

两个动作时态一致（表示两个动作几乎同时发生）

We made up our mind to buy this house as soon as we saw it.
