比较状语从句

二、课文精讲：

1. People are not so honest as they once were.

（1）not so … as: 不如……那样 = not as … as

People are less honest than they once were.

（2）once: adv. 曾经，以前

Once upon a time, there were two kingdoms that were the worst of neighbours.

从前有两个邻国，他们互相仇视。

2. The temptation to steal is greater than ever before – especially in large shops.

（1）temptation: n. 诱惑

temptation to do sth. 做……的诱惑

The temptation to open the box is too great.

打开盒子的诱惑实在是太大了。

resist the temptation to do sth. / of sth. 抵挡……的诱惑

我们要抵挡食物的诱惑。

We must resist the temptation of food.

（2）than ever before 比以往更多时候都……

比较级表达最高级的含义

同义改写：

The temptation to steal is the greatest of all time.

3. A detective recently watched a well-dressed woman who always went into a large store on Monday mornings.

（1）well-dressed: 穿着入时的，衣着讲究的

副词+动词过去分词→复合形容词

受到良好教育的 well-educated

最近新买的 recently-bought

来之不易的 hard-won

（2）who 引导的定语从句

先行词是？ a well-dressed woman

关系代词 who 在从句中可省略吗？充当什么成分？→主语，不可以省略

（3）具体某一天前使用介词 on

在傍晚 in the evening

在周六的傍晚 on Saturday evening
