1. In 1929, three years after his flight over the North Pole, the American explorer, R.E. Byrd, successfully flew over

the South Pole for the first time.

（1）the North Pole 北极

the South Pole 南极

pole n.（地球的）极

Pole Star 北极星

polar bear 北极熊

（2）three years after … North Pole: 在他飞跃北极三年之后 (插入语)

（3）fly – flew – flown

flight n. 飞行; 航班

fly over: 飞跃

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 飞跃疯人院

（4）explorer n. 探险家、勘探者

explore v. 探险、勘探

（5）for the first time 第一次

time 表示“次，回”

this time 这次；last time 上一次；next time 下一次

first, last and all the time 始终如一，贯彻到底

下一次看见他的时候，把这些照片给他。

Give him the photos next time you see him.

2. Though, at first, Byrd and his men were able to take a great many photographs of the mountains that lay below,

they soon ran into a serious trouble.

（1） though 引导让步状语从句，“虽然……，尽管……”不能与 but 连用。

Though he tries hard, he always fails.

虽然他很努力，不过失败依然是常事。

（2）be able to do sth. 能够做…… （be 动词体现时态）

还没有人能建成这么高的建筑呢。

No one has been able to build such a tall building.

（3）take a photograph of … 拍……的照片

他在离家前，拍了一张房子的照片。

He took a photograph of his house before he left home.

（4）that 引导的是什么从句？ → 定语从句，修饰先行词 the mountains

（5）lie v. 处于，位于，躺 (lay, lain)
