2024··Clara Daly was sitting on an Alaska Airlines flight from Boston to Los Angeles
when she heard a worried voice over the loudspeaker, “Does anyone on board know American Sign Language?”
Clara, 15 years old at that time, pressed the call button ( ). An air hostess came by and explained the
situation. “We have a passenger on the plane who’s blind and deaf,” she said. The passenger () seemed to want
something, but he was traveling alone and the air hostesses couldn’t understand what he needed.
Clara had been studying ASL for the past year to help blind and deaf people and she knew she’d be able to
finger spell into the man’s palm (). So she rose from her seat, walked toward the front of the plane, and knelt
() by the seat of the old man named Tim Cook. Gently taking his hand, she signed, “How are you? Are you OK?”
Cook asked for some water.
When the water arrived, Clara returned to her seat. She came by again a bit later because he wanted to know
the time. On her third visit, she stopped and stayed for a while.
“He didn’t need anything. He was lonely and wanted to talk,” Clara said.
So for the next hour, she “talked” about her family and her plans for the future. Cook “told” Clara how he
had become blind over time and shared stories of his days as a traveling salesman. Even though he couldn’t see her,
she “looked attentively at his face with such kindness”, a passenger reported.

someone he could speak to, and she was such an angel.”

2024·辽宁盘锦·模)Su Shi isn’t a strange name to us, as we learn his ci in textbooks. Su is one of the
most popular ancient writers. He was good at almost all kinds of writings and art, including poems, ci and prose (
) as well as calligraphy ( 书 法 ) and painting. But Su was not only respected for his talents, but also for his
positive attitude towards life.
When he was young, he passed the imperial examination (科举考试) and got a degree of Jinshi. After that,
he became an official. Unluckily, Su was demoted () to serve in far areas because of other officials’ bad words
about him. But he was not too discouraged.
First, he went to Huangzhou, in today’s Hubei. There he tried to enjoy life in the countryside. He farmed a
piece of land which he called Dongpo. This is why people call him Dongpo. It is also said that he invented Dongpo
Pork, a famous Chinese dish, during this period. Many of his poems were written there, too. Including Tune:
Calming the Waves. Its line “Impervious to wind, rain or shine, I’ll have my will (归去! 也无风雨也无晴)” showed
his open-minded attitude.
Su was also demoted to Danzhou, in today’s Hainan. At the beginning, he couldn’t get used to the hot and
wet weather. He couldn’t understand the local language. Instead of getting sad, he set up schools and got along well
with the locals. Many people traveled from far places to visit him.

2024··Do you like to travel alone? Or do you think it’s better to travel with friends? If
you’re still deciding, please read on. I will explain the advantages of both ways.
One of the great things about traveling alone is that you make the rules about where you go and what you
eat. You’ll be surprised at what you discover about yourself without any influence.
Traveling alone really shows you what you’re made of and helps you to discover inner strength (
) you didn’t know you had. Besides, it also gives you time to think, learn and grow. When your eyes are wide
open, you’ll get a whole new outlook on the world.
It’s easy to think that traveling alone is lonely. Although that may sometimes be true, you’re hardly ever
alone. When you travel in a one-person team, this can provide a chance for you to enjoy the most interesting part of
travel—communicating with the locals and meeting travelers from all corners of the world.
In fact, traveling to know more about the world is not easy. There’s research to be done, flights to be booked
and choices to be made, not to mention that things can—and often do—go wrong. One of the main advantages of
traveling with friends is being able to share these things and support each other through the process, even if it’s just
someone who will wait with your bag when you go to the bathroom.
Just as your mother always says, it’s true that traveling with others can give you a sense of safety, especially
if you’re new to travel. You know that if you get lost or have your wallet stolen, there’s someone to hold your hand
when you try to explain your situation in a foreign police station.
There’s no right or wrong way to travel. Whether you travel alone or team up with friends, it depends on
you.

2024·陕西宝鸡·二模)
As an old saying goes in Xunpu, Fujian province, “Put flowers in your hair in this life and you’ll also be
pretty in the afterlife.” In the past, all the women in the small fishing village had long hair, and then they put
colorful and special floral (花的) headdresses on their hair. The headdress is known as zanhua. Zanhua was listed as
a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
As a child, Huang Rongbing would watch his mother comb () her long and thick hair. After forming a
bun at the back of her head, she would put colorful lowers into her hair, the 34-year-old recalled.
The headdress inspired Huang’s career (职业) choice. In 2016, he and his older sister opened a salon. There,
tourists can get their hair styled in the Xunpu tradition and have their photos taken. “We have been fully booked
and now there are over 200 businesses offering services to dress tourists with a zanhua,” said Huang.
The increase in tourist visits has made Huang happy. That’s because it not only keeps the business busy but
also helps spread the history and culture behind zanhua headwear.
After going through the full zanhua experience, Hu Titi, one of Huang’s customers, even brought zanhua
culture to Paris in France last year. Under the Eifel Tower, she shot photos and videos of herself dressed in
traditional Chinese clothes with a zanhua in her hair.
Huang said the women of Xunpu are hard-working, warm-hearted and brave. They are famous for catching
the best seafood. “When they put a zanhua on their head, they express their wish for happiness. The flowers are
seen as a symbol of hope,” he added.

AWhat do Xunpu villagers believe in?
BWhen did the visitors go to Xunpu?
