A Heavenly Moose
THE CANDLES IN the trophy room guttered to cowering blue sparks at the base of
the wicks. The cold draft got colder. I looked up. One of the moose faces had grown
whiter, the snout shorter, the eyes sadder. "Sweet Jesus, Papa, but you look strange
with antlers," I whispered.
The stove roared suddenly as if devouring a new log. "Sscat! Get out! Sscram—"
I set the candelabra back on the table, and faced the spectre. "For pity's sake, Papa,
will you quit the macabre monosyllables? If you've something to tell me, come out
with it."
"Nag, nag, nag," the fire snapped and Papa grinned a moose-wide grin.
As cold as I felt, I was soaking with perspiration. My head throbbed and my feet
burned and here I stood arguing with my dead father, who was no doubt of even less
use in spectral form than he had been in life. Just then the door flew open and I
twisted to stare dazedly at an opera-caped Vasily Vladovitch.
My host stared at me as if I was insane.
"The water bucket!" he cried, and pointed. I picked it up and threw the contents into
the fire, which blossomed into a wide explosive ball.
Suffocating black smoke filled the air. From within the stove, the choked flames
sizzled themselves to death, hissing "crosses," and then "crusssscifixsss" as it died.
