Dear Smith，
Respectful greetings! I am Li Hua, an exchange student from China.I am writing to ask for your precious
guidance on the upcoming poetry exchange meeting where I would share a Chinese poem.
I chose “Quiet Night Thoughts”by Li Bai, a poet whose work I admire for its vivid imagination and free
employment of language. This poem displays his feelings of homesickness and the beauty of a quiet night. I
believe it will offer the audience a deep insight into the richness of Chinese literature and culture.
However, I am eager to hear your advice on how to clearly convey the poem’s spirit and its cultural
significance. Your suggestions would be helpful in making my presentation more impactful.

The boy was about 25 yards away from the jetty. As I stood at the edge of the Jetty, my heart pounding in
my chest like a drum. There’s no time for me to think about more. Sucking in a deep breath, I threw myself into
the water. As soon as I jumped in, I felt like I was back in that pool, breathless, struggling, terrified. I tried to
focus, but fighting the force of the water wasn’t easy. At some point, I even felt like I wouldn’t make it. I could
feel my muscles burning.
“Jason, you can do it!” I heard Matt say on the jetty while I was desperate in the water. Feeling a new sense
of determination welling up inside me, I pushed myself harder and finally I reached the boy. I swam with all my
strength and fought to get us back to land. Matt jumped into the water. I felt strong arms lift me. And, as we made
our way to safety I realized something incredible: I was no longer afraid. I turned my head and saw the boy was
hugged tightly by his mother. I looked out to the sea. Weary as I was, the water had never looked so beautiful.
