A trip to Paris is not complete without a visit to the Eiffel Tower. To get the
most out of your visit, read our tips below
Visit at Night
Riding up the Eiffel Tower at night and looking out over the streets of Paris,
you’ll see why Paris is known as the “City of Light”. At street level the
spotlights on the top of the Tower zoom across the Paris skyline, and the
reflections of the Tower in the Seine are sights not to be missed.
Purchase Your Ticket in Advance Online
Bypass the long ticket lines at the Eiffel Tower by purchasing your ticket
online from the Eiffel Tower website. You’ll pick a time to visit, and then select
whether to print out the ticket or display it on your phone or iPad a convenient
option if you buy your ticket in Paris without easy access to a printer.
Don’t Bring Valuable Objects with You
Before entering the Eiffel Tower, your bags will be examined by a security
officer. If an item you are carrying sets off the metal detector, the officer will take
you away from the line for further inspection. We’ve stood in line for hours
behind people who missed their chance to go up the Eiffel Tower.
Have Drinks and Snacks at the Eiffel Tower
If you’re like usafter an exciting trip to the Eiffel Toweryou’ll be ready
to rest your legs and have a relaxing snack and a drink in a Parisian cafe. Across
the Seine in the Trocadero area, there are many elegant cafes. The atmosphere is
great but the prices are in the stratosphere. Actually, the perfect place for
common visitors to eat and drink is on the Eiffel Tower itself.

Imagine a cat that does not need someone to clean up after it keeps an old
person company and helps him remember to take medicine. That is the shared
dream of the toy maker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University in Providence,
Rhode Island. The researchers received a 3-million-dollar award from the
National Science Foundation for the special project. They want to find ways to
add artificial intelligence, or AI, to Hasbro's “Joy for All” robot.
The cat has already been on sale for several years. Though priced at over
1,000 dollars, it sold quite well. It was meant to act as a “companion” for old
people. Now the project is aimed at developing additional abilities for the cat.
Researchers at Brown's Humanity Centered Robotics Initiative are working to
decide which activities old adults may need the most. They hope to make the cat
perform a small number of activities very well. Such activities include finding lost
objects and reminding the person to take medicine or to see a doctor. They also
want to keep the cost down to just a few hundred dollars.
It is an idea that has appealed to Jeanne Elliott. Her 93-year-old mother Mary
Derr lives with her in South Kingstown. Derr has dementia. The “Joy for All” cat
that Elliott bought this year has become a true companion for Derr. The cat stays
with Derr and keeps her calm while Elliott is at work. Elliott said a robotic cat
that helps her mother to remember to take her medicine and be careful when she
walks would be greater.
The researchers are trying to learn how the improved cats will complete
helpful activities and how they will communicate. They say that they do not want
a talking cat, however. Instead they are trying to design a cat that can move its
head in a special way to successfully communicate its message. In the end, they
hope to create an exchange between humans and the cat in which humans feel the
cat needs them. By doing so, the researchers hope they can even help prevent
feelings of loneliness and sadness among elderly people.
5What's the purpose of the project?
ATo relieve the pain of the elderly. BTo promote the sales of a robot.
CTo invent a robotic cat for the elderly. DTo help make the robotic cat
smarter.
6Compared with the old model, what will the new robotic cat be like?
ASmaller. BCheaper. CMore talkative. DSofter.
7What can we infer from the last paragraph?
AA talking cat is quite popular among the elderly.
*
BFeelings of sadness among the elderly are unavoidable.
CEach family can afford such a cat in the future.
DThe feeling of being needed is vital to the elderly.
In a recent study of 19-month-olds, University of Chicago doctoral student
Lauren Howard found that children who heard various languages in their
neighborhoods were more receptive to people who spoke languages other than
their parents ‘language.
“We measured imitation. At this age, that’s how they show us their
willingness to learn, ”explained Howard. The lead author of the report titled
Neighborhood Linguistic Diversity Predicts Infants' Social Learning. The
experiments tested how well the babies could learn new tasks from a non- English
speaker.
The study, which included 82 children from the Chicago and Washington
areas, was in the November issue of Cognition.
“Babies are not only affected by parents and caregivers--- previous studies
proved that --but also by people they hear at the store or on the bus, "Howard
said. “Incidental exposure matters.”
The study indicates that kids in diverse communities may grow up to have
open minds. Good news for families living in such neighborhoods--- but can other
families do something to increase children's cultural exposure
Cultural diversity can be within reach, even in unlikely areas. Although she
grew up in not very diverse" Julie, 23 said she picked up much knowledge
about other languages and cultures from the many students her family hosted
through the AFS-USA international student exchange program.
“It’s the little differences that make you more understanding and less
judgmental, Julie said “Yuilya from Kazakhstan, for example, was very
disciplined because she couldn't go to college unless her grades were good.
Matias from Paraguay wasn't used to being on time because his culture is more
laid-back. ”
For families unable to host a student for a whole year, AFS-USA offers other
volunteer opportunities, such as being “welcome families ”to ease students
transitions(过渡).
But there are countless ways to expose kids to other countries, said Lucas,
author of “Growing Up Global: Raising Children to Be at Home in the World.”
Just a few of her tips: Take the kids to foreign films. Try exotic restaurants.
Put a world map on the wall. Help your children’s teachers make global
classrooms. Encourage the kids to invite friends of other cultures for dinner.
“They’ll thank you later, "Lucas said.
8What does Howard stress by saying "Incidental exposure matters"
ABabies are also influenced by people outside their home
BParents fail to realize the importance of incidental learning
CParents and caregivers have more influence on babies
DBabies learn little knowledge at the store or on the bus.
9How was Julie exposed to different cultures
AShe frequently volunteered in some welcome families
BShe lived in neighborhoods with various language learn
CShe was a member of the AFS-USA program
DShe learned from the foreign students living in her home
10Which might be Julie's attitude to Matias's lateness
ACurious BHappy
CTolerant Danger
11What are Lucas's tips mainly about
AHow to improve children’s behavior
BHow to teach children foreign languages
