After the knock-out Maui wildfires, people from all walks of life managed to find ways to support the victims.
While many felt more comfortable giving to the Hawaii Red Cross or grassroots organizations, others wanted to
donate directly to the people in need. Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson felt that way too, so they
created The People’s Fund of Maui, which aims to support the displaced residents of Lahaina as they try to rebuild
their lives.
“I have been meeting with people throughout the community that were impacted by the fires over the last few
weeks, asking what they most needed and how I could be of service,” Winfrey said in a statement. “The main thing
I’ve been hearing is their concern about how to move forward under the enormous financial burden ( ). The
community has come together in so many wonderful ways, and my intention is to support those impacted as they
determine what rebuilding looks like for them.”
Winfrey and Johnson posted a video announcing a donation of $10 million on Instagram, and calling for those
who need assistance to apply. The People’s Fund of Maui aims to provide direct relief to individuals in the form of
$1,200 monthly payments for as long as possible. The recipients of this fundraiser are individuals who are over the
age of 18, reside in Lahaina and Kula, and lost their homes during the fire. “We are beyond grateful to be working
alongside community leaders of Maui to launch the People’s Fund of Maui,” Johnson shared in a statement. “These
leaders are offering their guidance to ensure our fund can put money directly in the. hands of those individuals most
affected.”
Johnson, who spent some time in Honolulu as a kid, praised first responders and com munity members who
have stepped up to the challenge. “As people around the world watched the great loss caused by the Maui wildfires,
they also witnessed the great spirit of our Polynesian culture and the strength of the people of Maui,” said Johnson.

Thomas Edison invented the phonograph in 1877, and it quickly became the most popular home-entertainment
device of the century. Seeking to provide a visual accompaniment to the phonograph, Edison helped Dickson, a
young laboratory assistant, invent a motion-picture camera in 1888. Building upon the work of Maybridge and
Marey, Dickson combined the two final essential s of motion-picture recording and viewing technology.
These were a device, adapted from the escapement mechanism of a clock, to ensure the intermittent ( 周期的)
but regular motion of the film tape through the camera and a regularly perforated ( 穿孔的) film tape to ensure
precise synchronization () between the film tape and the shutter. Dickson’s camera, the Kinetograph, initially
imprinted up to 50 feet (15metres)of film at the rate of about 40 frames per second.
Dickson was not the only person who had been solving the problem of recording and reproducing moving
images. Inventors throughout the world had been trying for years to invent working motion-picture machines. In
fact, several European inventors, including the Englishman William Friese-Greene, applied for patents on various
cameras, projectors, and camera-projector combinations contemporaneously or even before Edison and his
associates did.
Because Edison had originally come up with motion pictures as an adjunct to his phonograph, he did not
entrust the invention of a projector to accompany the Kinetograph. Rather, he had Dickson design a type of viewing
device called the Kinetoscope, in which a continuous 47-foot (14-metre) film circle ran between a lamp and a
shutter for individual viewing.
Starting in 1894, Kinetoscopes were marketed commercially through the firm of Raff and Gammon for $250
to $300a piece. The Edison Company established its own Kinetograph studio in West Orange, New Jersey, to
supply films for the Kinetoscopes. In April of that year the first Kinetoscope cinema was opened in a storefront in
New York City. The cinema charged 25cents for admission to a bank of five machines.
8. What’s the purpose of Edison helping Dickson invent a motion-picture camera?
A. To support the work made by Muybridge and Marey.
B. To offer viewing technology assistance to his invention.
C. To make preparations for his invention of the phonograph.
