Grief is no stranger to me. I know the pain--sharp and biting-lasts
for a wrenching moment in time to be replaced by the deep ache of
perennial loss. Somewhere in between these two, when hope rears its
ephemeral shape, time, motion, and pain stop. Bewildered, I turn to
hope--clutch its hem, twist the robes-pleading to the Fates to deny
what may be inevitable. All it takes is an act of will to stop the
downward spiral. But lack of will is part of the dementia. I dedicate
this book to those poor souls whose struggle we look on with horror,
tears, and love.

SYNOPSIS
When young Jim Endicott celebrates his sixteenth birthday with a quiet
dinner at his modest home on the Terran colony planet of Wolfbane, he
has no idea his peaceful, ordered life is about to be shattered
In fact, he is overjoyed at finally reaching sixteen, because now he
can apply to the Solis Space Academy, the training ground for the men
and women who will eventually con the great white ships of Earth on
their voyages of discovery into the rest of the galaxy. And that is
Jim's single and greatest dream: to join those ranks of legendary
starship captains and play his own role in Terra's long surge
outward.
After an evening of cake and games, he prepares to send his application
to Terra. But first he speaks with his father, Carl Endicott, and is
devastated when Carl bluntly refuses to allow him to apply. Worse, Carl
will give no explanation. Jim returns to his bedroom and rebelliously
sends the application off, disobeying his father over a major issue for
the first time in his life.
On Terra, a mysterious figure named Delta intercepts the application
and knows for the first time in sixteen years what happened to his
enemy Carl Endicott. He dispatches his best assassin, a hard-bitten
female killer named Steele, to finish the job she failed at sixteen
years ago: murdering Jim's father.
In turmoil over hi disobedience, Jim confesses to Carl, who blows his
stack and slaps him--also a first. Then Carl tells Jim he's destroyed
their lives, and they will have to go on the run from forces he won't
describe. The family packs up and departs for their mountain cabin,
managing to escape only a short time before Steele and her two
compatriots kick in the front door of the now-deserted Endicott home.
Carl, Jim, and his mother, Tabitha, arrive at the cabin with Steele
hard on their trail. Carl shows unexpected competence at the killing
game himself, rigging several explosive booby traps about the cabin,
but in an ensuing firefight with Steele, Jim accidentally kills Carl

Styron & Ritter .75 rocket pistol. Carl's final words make the load of
guilt Jim bears almost insupportable. To make matters worse, Steele,
though wounded, kidnaps Tabitha and escapes back to Terra.
Jim, on the run, goes to Plebtown, a high-tech underclass ghetto on
Wolfbane, where he meets Cat, a girl about his own age. Gradually he
learns that Cat isn't what she seems--and may be a member of a shadowy
Pleb revolutionary organization. She tells Jim the answers to the
questions about his--and Carl's--past may be on Terra itself. Shortly
after, with Jim struggling with his first case of true love, they part,
leaving Jim to make his way to Terra by stowing away with a load of
sheep on an interstellar circus ship.
On Terra he falls into the hands of the Pleb rebels' leader, a stone
killer named Jonathan, from whom he learns that Delta has managed to
kidnap Cat and is now offering to trade her and Jim's mother for Jim
himself. Delta, it turns out, is the amoral and ruthless dictator
behind the entire Terran government.
Jim agrees to turn himself over to Delta after having learned that Carl
was not his real father and Tabitha not his real mother. But Jonathan,
the Pleb leader, betrays him and hands him over without freeing
Tabitha, though he does retrieve Cat. Jim finds himself at the mercy
of Delta and is taken before him.
In the ensuing confrontation, Jim learns the great secret of his own
past: His true mother, Kate, altered his genotype and encoded a great
secret within it--a secret about how to link human minds into a vast
supercomputer called the mind arrays. Delta wants the secret. But
only Jim possesses the codes that will allow Delta's machines to
translate the secret--except he doesn't know what those codes are.
While this is going on, Jonathan is launching an attack against Delta's
satellite, and part of the attack is a virus embedded in Jim that
attacks both computers and humans. As Jonathan fights his way deeper
into the satellite, the virus is triggered and begins to destroy the
links to Delta's own crude mind arrays, Delta, and Jim himself.
Jonathan, whose only goal in life is to kill Delta, arrives as Jim is
struggling to save his own life. Delta is already disintegrating, and
Jim is struggling for his life against the disease he carries within
himself. Cat also shows up, and in the ensuing battle between Cat,
Steele, Jonathan, and Jim, Jonathan is killed and Steele badly wounded.
In the course of the battle, Jim realizes the secret to the code and
gives it to Delta. Delta uses it to unlock Jim's genetic code and
discovers that Jim's mother has left him with the secret of a new kind
